I have a question about the tv show Smallville?

Well everyone who knows the Superman lecacy. Knows that Clark Kent was born on the planet Krypton unto Jor-El and Lara. Then was sent down to earth from a metor shower. Then was adopted by Martha & Jonthan Kent. So I want to know why does the tv show Smallville make Jor-El seem like a bad guy. I know he is not a bad guy, so why does Smallville make Jor-El out to be a bad guy?
