How do I get my baby back to sleeping in his bed?

I have an 8 month old. From the time he was 10 weeks old, you could put him down drowsy and he would fall asleep and sleep all night long. At around 7 months old, he got a cold and started teething and had trouble sleeping lying down. Out of desperation to get some sleep myself, I started sleeping holding him in my bed. Now I can't get him out!!! As soon as I put him down in his bed, his head pops up and he starts crying...I'm desperate! At this rate, he will never get a little sister! :) Any suggestions other than crying it out?
