Is it possible to fake a bleeding ulcer?
My elderly mother-in-law has been showing drug seeking behavior and her doctors will no longer give her pain pills. She takes a lot of medication for her blood pressure, heart, and diabetes. Yesterday we watched her condition deteriorate. Three days ago she felt fine. Two days ago she reported feeling weak , unable to eat, stomach pain and that she needed to go to the hospital. She also said that she had been unable to take her meds for a few days. Yesterday we took her to 2 doctor appointments and she grew steadily weaker and her blood pressure decreased. The second doctor admitted her to the hospital. Her hemoglobin had gone down to 9.4 grams from 13 grams a month ago and her blood pressure was dangerously low. As soon as she was in the hospital bed, she perked up and started asking for pain medicine. She is having an upper gi today so hopefully they will find and cauterize a bleed and she will start feeling better. We are wondering if she could have intentionally caused the bleeding and low blood pressure by taking a handful of warfarin and blood pressure pills before the doctor visit in order to get back in the hospital and get drugs? Any thoughts?
