How did they determine which way was clockwise on invention?

I am uming that the timepiece was invented in the northern hemisphere. Why did the inventors decide to go "left to right" on this invention when nature causes the drains to rotate the other way in the northern hemisphere? One would think they would follow something that was naturally similar just to not look odd. DopeInducedthought
